To kick start our blog we're taking you back to basics and answering 2 important questions that will help you make more informed decisions when it comes to cyber security:
What is cyber security?
Why is cyber security important?
Knowing these answers will help you understand the importance of being safe online - whether you are at work or at home.
What is Cyber Security?
The National Centre for Cyber Security (NCSC) describe cyber security's core function as protecting the following from damage or theft:
Devices we use; and
Services we access.
This includes the personal information that is stored on devices and online.
How to protect these devices, services and information doesn't have to be complex - and this all depends on your security requirements and the type of information you are protecting.
For example, are your bank details saved on your device, or do you have an account for a website you rarely use with little/ no personal information stored on it? These two scenarios will have different minimum safety requirements. But we will explain that rabbit hole on another blog post in the future - so stay tuned!

Why is Cyber Security Important?
If you were to lose your smartphone, or have it stolen, what information could a stranger access?
If your first thought was immediate impending doom, then you definitely need to make sure that this device is as secure as possible. This is a simple way of highlighting the importance of the data we share and store online and how it could be compromised.
If your devices are not password protected then there is no protection in place to prevent anyone accessing your device and its information. This is the simplest step on the path to securing your personal information, and the probably the most well-known.
Businesses will have different requirements, and easily more information that requires protection, the fundamental steps are the same - but there may be more of them.
If you are unsure of what else you need to protect, then go back to the initial question and work through each device you own or website you have an account with and imagine what could be stolen and the consequences.
We are not just consultants for businesses but can also help individuals improve their cyber security at home and on the go.
